Much of human behaviour now takes place online, and while most of it is harmless, there is also the potential for unhealthy habit-formation and even addiction.
Pornography use in particular can become problematic, as can other areas of online sexual behaviour such as dating apps, sexting, chat rooms, web cams, etc.
Gambling, gaming, shopping, and work are areas that are already familiar in terms of potential addiction, but which take on new dimensions online.
Social media may also create addictive patterns rooted in factors such as social competition, “fear of missing out”, craving for distraction etc.
If addictive problems arise, a variety of interventions focusing on Cognition, Emotion, Environment, Behaviour and Motivation can be useful.
